Dare to avoid bad standards
I once was thinking out loud and shared my guesses with a friend, who told a friend.
After a while, another friend of mine came to me with some strange story that had to be true - he said - since he heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who surely doesn't make stuff up.
Unwillingly, my wild guesses had become The Definitive Truth as the third round came about, as soon as the receiver of the message heard the same idea - unquestioned - from two different sources.
I believe whatever it is that happens within smaller circles, happens in technology: there are standards, and there are "standards".
Sometimes we need to just look at the facts, and be able to steer away from standards that are considered as such for no good reason.
